with reference to my despatch No.283 of Jine 18th.

I have the honour to tranmit herewith a copy of a dispatch

which I have addroned to the officer Administering the

Government of Hongằng enclosing correspondence with the

Chinese Government th regard to the handing over of two

of the Chinese gunbosts at Hongkong and of certain arms and

ammunition found on bard three others to the Canton auther-

ities.

with respect a the first of these matters, the

Chinese fovernment complɩined that the Hongkong Government

should not have handed over the "Chiang Kung" and the "Kuangli"

to the Canton Government, but, en information already supplies

to me by Er. Severn, I ma able to reply that the step was

taken as the vessies properly belonged to the Frovince of

Ruang tung/
